Form of Simple Past Tense
Verb Past

1. Basic Form:

S + Verb Past + O 

Subject (S) 

Verb Past (Common called as V2)

Object ( O ) 

Example:

He won the silver medal

Subject: He 

Verb Past: Won 

Infinitive (Kata Dasar): Win

Object: The silver medal

2. Subject

He, She, it, we, you, they, Dani, Suci, Rindu dan Kasih 

Noun: pencil, badger, apple, 

3. Verb Past

In Indonesia, commonly called as Verb 2, Verb Past = Verb 2.

Two types of simple past verb: regular and irregular

Those verbs add either a -ed or -d.

A. Regular verb:

forms constructed by adding the suffixes “-d” or “-ed” to the end of the word

Example: 

Infinitive = Base form

a. walk 

Infinitive: Walk

Verb Past: Walked

b. Create

Infinitive: Create 

Verb Past: Created

B. Irregular verb:

- Verbs in which all the three forms are the same 

Example: 

Infinitive: Put

Verb Past: Put

- Verbs in which two of the three forms are the same 

Example: 

Infinitive: Sit

Verb Past: Sat 

- Verbs in which all three forms are different 

Example: 

Infinitive: Drink

Verb Past: Drank

C. Exception, Some verbs can be both regular and irregular. Examples are:

Burn – burnt – burnt (irregular)

Burn – burned – burned (regular)

Dream – dreamt – dreamt (irregular)

Dream – dreamed – dreamed (regular)

Lean – lent – lent (irregular)

Lean – leaned – leaned (regular)

Learn – learnt – learnt (irregular)

4. Sentence of Simple Past

A. Affirmative Sentence: Subject + Verb Past + Object 

Example: 

Infinitive: Go

Verb Past: Went

Mr. Nino went to Italy.

Detailed:

Mr. Nino: Subject

Went: Verb Past

To Italy: Object

B. Negative Sentence: S + did not + infinitive + object

For negative sentence of simple past, you must put ‘did not or didn’t’ before infinitive. The word ‘did not or didn’t’ is indicate the simple past itself.  

Example: 

Infinitive: Sleep

Naruto did not sleep in Ungaran.

Detailed:

Naruto: Subject

Did not sleep: verb past

In Ungaran: Object

C. Interrogative Sentence: Did + Subject + Infinitive + Object? 

For Interrogative sentence, you must put ‘Did’ before subject and give the question mark to end the sentence like this (?).

Infinitive: Eat

Did you eat Gablok?

Detailed: 

Did: Interrogative Simple Past

You: Subject

Eat: Infinitive 

Gablok: Object

D.  Interrogative Negative Sentence: Did not  + Subject + Infinitive + Object?

For Interrogative sentence, you must put ‘Did not’ before subject and give the question mark to end the sentence like this (?).

Did not = didn’t 

Infinitive: drink

Did not you drink the tea? 

Detailed: 

Did not: Interrogative Negative Simple Past

You: Subject

Drink: Infinitive 

The tea: Object 

5. Example of Simple Past

- Arifianto come to my party. (Arifianto datang ke pesta ku)

- Galang did not complete his task. (Galang tidak menyelesaikan tugasnya)

- Puput did not like the horror movie. (Puput tidak menyukai film horror)

- Latu did not eat the meat. (Latu tidak makan daging)

- Ricard did not buy a house. (Ricard tidak membeli sebuah rumah)
