Procedure Text

The text of the procedure is a text that describes or allows us to create or use something.its social function is to describe how something is done through a series sequence. The communicative aim of this text is to explain how something is achieved through a series of actions or steps. There are three common structures in the text of the procedure.

The first is a target or a goal. The second one is the materials or devices. Steps or methods are the third and last. Understanding the text we're reading is a process or not that easy. You should read the title if the description begins with' how to create...' or' how to use...' it can definitely be that the text is the text of the operation.

What is procedure text?

A text that is designed to describe how something is achieved through a sequence of actions or steps. It explains how people perform different processes in a sequence of steps. This text uses simple present tense, often imperative sentences. It also uses the temporal conjunction such as first, second, then, next, finally, etc. a procedure is a specified series of actions or operations which have to be executed in the same manner in order to always obtain the same result under the same circumstances (for example, emergency procedures). Less precisely speaking, this word can indicate a sequence of tasks, steps, decisions, calculations and processes, that when undertaken in the sequence laid down produces the described result, product or outcome. A procedure usually induces a change. It is in the scientific method.

The generic structures of procedure text are:

1. Goal/aim ( or title): it is containt the purpose of the text. (e.g : how to make spagheti)
2. Materials (not required for all procedural texts): it is containt of the materials that used in the process. (e.g : the material to cook omelette are egg, onion, vegetable oil, etc)
3. Steps (the actions that must be taken): it is containt of the steps to make something in the goal. (e.g : first, wash the tomatoes, onion, ...., second cut the onions becomes slice. . . )

Language features of procedure text

In the procedure text, we use 

1. Simple present tense. And:
2. Use of imperatives (e.g.: cut, don’t mix)
3. Use of action verbs (e.g.: turn, put, mix)
4. Use of connectives (e.g. : first, then, finally, …) 
5. Use of adverbial phrases (e.g. : for five minutes, 2 centimeters from the top)

Purpose of a procedure text

An anticipated outcome that is intended or that guides your planned actions. A particular course of action intended to achieve a result. Or to help us do a task or make something. They can be a set of instructions or directions. There are two main things the purpose text procedure; to explain/tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something through a sequence of actions or steps and to explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do something.

Types of procedural texts

a. Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity

Recipes, rules for games, science experiments, road safety rules, how to do it manuals.

b. Texts that instruct how to operate things

How to operate an appliance, a machine, the photocopier, the computer

The example of procedure text

Example 1

How to make a sandwich (aim/goal)

You need (materials)

• 2 slices of bread
• Peanut butter
• A banana
• Honey

What you should do are : (steps)

1. Take two slices of bread
2. Spread peanut butter
3. Cut up a banana onto small slices and put them on one of the slices
4. Pour some honey over the bananas
5. Put the other slice of bread on top

Example 2

How to make a cup of coffee

Materials and ingedients :

• 2 Spoons of sugar
• one spoon of coffee powder
• hot
• Water
• a cup
• a spoon

Procedure:

1. Prepare two spoons of sugar, a cup, hot water, one spoon of coffee powder, a spoon.
2. Put one spoon of coffee powder into the cup.
3. Pour some hot water into the cup.
4. Add 2 spoons of sugar into a cup of coffee
5. Stir it well and the hot coffee is ready to drink

Example 3:

How to Make Nasi Uduk

Ingredients:

• 2 cups of rice
• 2 cups of coconut milk
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 pandan leaf
• 1 jeruk purut leaf
• 1 salam leaf
• 1 lemon grass

Utensils :

• pan
• big pot
• steamer
• rice paddle

Cooking method :

1. Cook the coconut milk with all the other ingredients excep the rice.
2. Meanwhile, wash the rice in another big pot.
3. When the coconut milk comes to a boil, pour it in the pot filled with rice and stir frequently until all the liquid is absorbed.
4. Move the rice to a steamer until it is cooked.
5. Take out the leaves before serving.

Presentation :

1. Serve hot on a platter with shredded omelet and a mixture of fried peanuts and fried onions.
2. Garnish the platter with sliced cucumber, tomato and green leaves. This recipe makes 4 servings.

Example 4

How to Make Fruit Ice

Materials :

• Mango
• Avocado
• Sugar water
• Milk
• Ice
• Apple
• Strawberries
• Wine
• Jackfruit

Steps:

1. First, cut the fruit round or dice.
2. Then, scratching the flesh of a melon.
3. Then, boil sugar with water until cooked for about 30 minutes.
4. Next, put in serving glasses that have been cut round pieces or dice.
5. Then, to taste pour the sugar water, put ice cubes and put milk on ice fruit.
6. Last, put the decorations on the glass with a piece of strawberry on it.
