Simple Past Tense

Class: V

Second Semester

A. Basic Pattern: S + Verb Past + O

Inf = Infinitive

Infinitive (kata dasar): Love

Verb Past: Loved

Inf: Fell

Verb Past: Felt

Time Frequent: Yesterday; # years, weeks, months, days, hours ago; in (past year); last (month, week, year)

Example:

(+) Abdul went to Bali for holiday last Sunday.

(Minggu kemarin, Abdul pergi ke Bali untuk berlibur)

(–) Abdul did not go to Bali for holiday last Sunday.

(Minggu kemarin, Abdul tidak pergi ke Bali untuk berlibur)

(?) Did Abdul go to Bali for holiday last Sunday?

(Minggu kemarin, Apakah Abdul pergi ke Bali untuk berlibur?)

2. Simple Past Pattern

(+) S + Verb Past + O

(–) S + did not (didn’t) + Inf + O

(?) Did + S + Inf + O?

     Did not + S + Inf + O?

Simple Present Tense: She joins the English club class at school.

Simple Past Tense: 

(+) She joined the English class at school yesterday.

Kemarin, dia bergabung dengan kelas bahasa Inggris di sekolah.

(–) She did not join the Englis class at school yesterday.

Kemarin, dia tidak bergabung dengan kelas bahasa Inggris di sekolah.

(?) (+) Did she join the English class at school yesterday?

Apakah dia bergabung dengan kelas bahasa Inggris di sekolah kemarin?

      (–) Did not she join the English class at school yesterday? 

Bukankah dia ikut kelas bahasa Inggris di sekolah kemarin?

3. Simple Past Pattern

Verb Past: Was, Were

Was: I, He, She, It, Ahmad

Were: They, We, You, Ahmad and Anis

ANA: (A) Adjective, (N) Noun, (A) Adverb 

Was not = Wasn't

Were not = Weren't 

(+) S + Was / Were + ANA

(–) S + Was / Were + not + ANA

(?)  Was / Were + S + ANA? 

     Was / Were not + S + ANA? 

Simple Present Tense: Arif is the smartest student in the class.

Simple Past Tense: 

(+) Arif was the smartest students in the class last year.

Tahun lalu, Arif murid yang paling pintar di kelas.

(–) Arif was not the smartest students in the class last year.

Tahun lalu, Arif bukan murid yang paling pintar di kelas.

(?) (+) Was Arif the smartest students in the class last year?

Apakah Arif murid yang paling pintar di kelas tahun lalu?

      (–) Was not Arif the smartest students in the class last year?

Bukankah Arif murid yang paling pintar di kelas tahun lalu?
